A flag for the Hmong people

Description

my flag for the Hmong people.

As far as I understand, very few people have ever heard about the Hmong. For those that haven't heard of them, the Hmong, Hmoob, Mong or Miao people are a people in south-east Asia, most notably in northern Laos and Vietnam, and southern China, but also slightly in east Burma/ Myanmar. Technically, the Hmong are a sub-member of the Miao group. The Hmong are further divided into 6 groups: White Hmong, Green Hmong, Red Hmong, Blue Hmong, Black Hmong, and Striped Hmong (The White and Green Hmong are the largest).

According to legend, the Hmong were originally one tribe under Chi You's Li (Chi You is often seen as tyrannical. Whether or not this is Chinese propaganda is debatable). In the battle of Zhuolu, the Yellow Emperor defeated Chi You and divided him and his tribe into nine parts. According to this legend, these Nine Tribes consolidated into the modern Miao people and the Yellow Emperor's people would become the modern Chinese. the Miao would be pushed further and further south until they reached their modern strongholds. The Hmong are also believed to related the Nomads of the Steppe (Remove the H and add an 'ol' to the end and you suddenly have Mongol).

In more recent years, the Hmong have decided to stop being forgotten, and in the Second Indochina war (Also known the Vietnam war), the Hmong fought along side the Americans in the 'Secret war' against the Communists. But since the loss of the Secret war, the Hmong have been persecuted in Laos and Burma, and to a much lesser extent China and Vietnam. The Hmong have been escaping to Thailand and from there mostly to the United States, such as my home city of Saint Paul, but also to California.

The flag is crooked, so that it points in the four compass directions, representing there diaspora. The Flag is then divided into nine parts, representing the 9 tribes of Li, and five colors representing the 5 'colored' Hmong (The Striped Hmong are represented as the stripes cross back and forth across the flag). The white symbol in the middle is the overall symbol of the Hmong, and surrounded with Red representing their blood filled history.

Anyone got any other information on the Hmong (especially from someone of Hmong descent)? My information is rather limited.
